History buffs can enjoy touring the historic district, including the Castillo de San Marcos, the prominent feature in the low, but beautiful, St. Augustine skyline. The Castillo, completed in 1695, protected St. Augustine from pirates and the forces of other nations attempting to seize control of Florida. Though Florida was eventually conceded to various nations, the Castillo itself never fell. Another prominent time period for St. Augustine was the golden age of Henry Flagler’s domination of the city. He built two gorgeous resorts in the late 1800s and bought another to control three distinct resorts within the small town. Tours are available at two of them: Flagler College (the former Ponce de Leon hotel) and the Lightner Museum (formerly the Alcazar hotel and casino). Flagler even built a jail to resemble a resort so that it wouldn’t damage the appearance of the town. Tours of the Old Jail, which is pink and resembles a large historic home, are available daily (and nightly). Combine history and excitement with the various ghost tours around town that feature true historic tales whose characters may or may not be wandering the town.
Shopping and dining abound in the historic district as well. Dozens of boutiques and galleries offer items and artwork available nowhere else in the world. Five-star dining is available at many beautiful locations in the historic district. Every restaurant in town is atmospheric, especially the ones right along the water at the bay front. After dinner, enjoy a carriage ride, drinks atop the San Sebastian Winery at their Cellar Upstairs Wine and Jazz bar, or a dessert on St. George Street, the unique pedestrian-only street that runs from the city gates to the Plaza de la Constitucion.
Anastasia Island, the barrier island on which Hibiscus Condominium Resort is actually located, offers plenty to see and do as well. The historic St. Augustine Lighthouse resides here. During the full moon, they host a moon rise party complete with Champagne. A tour of the lighthouse and museum in the old lighthouse keeper’s home is fun, educational, and offers one of the best photo-ops in town. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm, featuring every species of crocodile and even albino alligators, is just across the street from the Lighthouse, and just minutes from the historic district and Hibiscus Condominium Resort. Marineland, Florida’s first theme park, offers the opportunity to swim with the dolphins. The Fort Matanzas National Monument is also located on Anastasia Island and offers free ferry rides every hour over to the barrier island south of Anastasia, Rattlesnake Island, to tour the old small fort that watched the mouth of the Matanzas River for invaders headed north to St. Augustine. It is not uncommon to spot manatees and dolphins during the ferry ride and from the top of the watchtower.
So for the art connoisseur, nature lover, gastronome, history buff, architectural specialist, paranormal investigator, outdoorsman, or someone who fancies themselves a little bit of each, St. Augustine is the destination of choice, and Hibiscus Condominium Resort is the lodging of choice so that you can unwind in a place that feels like home between your countless adventures.
